APPOINTMENTS:
William Clark, Ph.D. was recently elected to a 3-year term as secretary of the Faculty Senate and Faculty Senate Council at Washington University. The Faculty Senate consists of more than 1500 voting member of the faculty of all the constitutent schools, and advises the chancellor and the Board of Trustees on matters of major University policy.

AWARDS:
Michael Valente, Ph.D., Director of Adult Audiology, received the Presidential Award from the American Academy of Audiology on April 2, 2009 at their annual convention in Dallas, TX. The Presidential Award recognizes audiologist who have made significant contributions to the profession of audiology and the American Academy of Audiology (AAA). Congratulations Mike!

PRESENTATIONS:
Jianxin Bao, PhD, Research Associate Professor, presented, "A Study of Embryonic Stem Cells and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells in Self-renewal and Differentiation" at the Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine World Congress meeting January 20 & 21, 2009 in Palm Springs, CA.

GRANTS:
Eric Slattery, MD, Research Fellow, received a one year, $20,000 grant from the National Organization for Hearing Research titled, "Cisplatin Ototoxicity and Regeneration in the Avian Inner Ear."

Lisa Potts, PhD, Research Instructor, received a one year, $20,000 grant from the American Hearing Research Foundation titled, "Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses in Normal-Hearing and Hearing-Impaired Adults with and without Amplification."

Barbara Bohne, PhD., Gary Harding, received a three year grant from National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) titled, "Adverse Effects of Noise on Hearing: Basic Mechanisms"

Keiko Hirose, MD, Associate Professor, received a one year, $55,000 grant from American Otological Society, Inc., titled, "Mononuclear phagocytes in the mammalian cochlea: studies on inhibition and activation of leukocytes in the inner ear."

Brian Nussenbaum, MD, Associate Professor, received a one year grant from AO Foundation, entitled, "Oncologic Considerations for Using BMP-4 in Craniofacial Tissue Engineering."

Pablo Blazquez, PhD, Research Associate Professor, received a three year grant from NIH ,Angelaki PI, entitled, "Neural Organization and Function of the Vestibulo-Cerebellum."; and a five year grant from NIH/NINDS, entitled, "Sensory Motor Processing Carried Out by the Cerebellum During Oculomotor Behavior."

Alec Salt, PhD, Professor, received a two year grant from Glaxo Smith Kline, entitled, "Evaluation of GSK Monoclonal Antibodies for Treatment of Age-Related Hearing Loss in an Animal Model of Presbyacusisn."

Ravindra Uppaluri, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, received a one year grant from Percy Memorial, entitled, "Contribution of Chemokine Receptor CXCR3 to Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma."

Nancy Tye-Murray,PhD Research Professor, received a five year grant from NIH/NIDCD, entitled, "Auditory Speech Processing in Hearing Impaired Children."

Judith Lieu, MD, Assistant Professor, received one year grant from NIH-ICTS, entitled, "Research Network for Studies of Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss."

Jill Firszt, PhD, Professor, received a one year grant from AAA, entitled, " Effect of Hearing Loss on the Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses in the Presence of Noise."
